From £2.5K a Month and Losing Money to £19,400 Income in a Profitable Month

Meet Charlotte, Hunt Fitness

Charlotte runs Hunt Fitness, helping busy working professionals aged 40–65 through small group personal training and team training.

Before working with FBDA, Charlotte had already taken an exciting step in her business journey.

After building her client base in big box gyms, she moved into a studio of her own and brought in her first contractor for two evenings a week.

At the time, it felt like a huge achievement.

But outside of those two evenings, Charlotte was still doing everything herself — mornings, evenings and weekends.

And there was another problem she hadn’t yet realised.

Despite bringing money into the business, the business itself wasn’t making any money.

The Challenge

When Charlotte first started working with FBDA around four and a half years ago, Hunt Fitness was bringing in approximately £2,500 a month.

At the time, Charlotte was delighted with that figure.

Then she started looking properly at the numbers.

Nicky sent Charlotte FBDA’s financial Optic Sheets and asked her to enter the information from her business.

What happened next has become a moment Charlotte can laugh about now.

She was training for the London Marathon and out running when she sent Nicky a voice note. She had filled in the spreadsheet, but everything was showing red.

Charlotte was convinced there was a problem with it.

“I think that the Excel spreadsheet is broken. Can you have a look at it?”

Nicky checked the calculations.

There was nothing wrong with them.

The red figures were showing Charlotte that the business was operating in the negative.

Why Charlotte Chose FBDA

For Charlotte, working with FBDA hasn’t been about being handed somebody else’s definition of what a successful fitness business should look like.

One of the things she values most is that the team listened to her version of success.

As new ideas emerged and her ambitions developed, the focus was on helping her make those ideas work while ensuring the underlying business remained profitable.

“The biggest thing working with FBDA has been that they listened to me and what was success to me, what did I want to do.”

That support has included working with Nicky and James, alongside exposure to Maxine, Barrie and other people building their own businesses.

What Changed

Understanding the numbers gave Charlotte a much clearer picture of what was really happening inside Hunt Fitness.

From there, progress happened over time.

Charlotte describes continually building towards her goals, then surpassing them and setting new ones.

At one stage, she told Nicky that bringing in £10,000 a month would be amazing.

His response was to encourage her to think bigger.

Quarter after quarter, Charlotte continued setting larger goals — while also making sure Hunt Fitness remained profitable.

Just as importantly, she began to believe those bigger ambitions were genuinely possible.

The Results

Charlotte’s progress has taken Hunt Fitness from approximately £2,500 a month when she started working with FBDA to a month in which the business brought in £19,400 of income and remained profitable.

Her experience includes:

  • Growing from approximately £2,500 monthly income at the beginning of her FBDA journey.
  • Understanding the difference between money coming into the business and actually making a profit.
  • Developing greater visibility over the financial health of Hunt Fitness.
  • Surpassing the goal she once considered ambitious of bringing in £10,000 a month.
  • Bringing £19,400 into the business in the month immediately before her testimonial while remaining profitable.
  • Setting progressively bigger goals each quarter.
  • Having support to challenge her thinking and work through problems.
  • Growing her belief in what is possible while continuing to work towards her own definition of success.

Charlotte sums up the impact simply:

“Working with FBDA for me has been an absolute game changer.”

More Than Just the Numbers

The financial progress is significant, but Charlotte is clear that her experience with FBDA has been about much more than hitting a particular monthly figure.

She regularly reaches out to Nicky and James when she has a problem and wants another perspective.

Sometimes that means drawing on their experience or receiving suggestions. Other times, it means having somebody challenge the way she is thinking about a problem.

That ongoing support has helped give Charlotte the motivation to keep moving forwards.

And rather than chasing somebody else’s idea of success, she has been able to move closer to her own version of it — while enjoying the process along the way.

What This Means for Other Fitness Business Owners

Charlotte’s experience highlights an important distinction between money coming into a business and a business actually being profitable.

When she first saw around £2,500 coming in each month, she was understandably excited. It was only when she properly examined the numbers that she discovered the business was operating in the negative.

Understanding those numbers gave her a clearer foundation from which to build.

Around four and a half years later, the ambitions are much bigger — but profitability remains part of the picture.

For Charlotte, success has meant continuing to grow Hunt Fitness while building the business she wants, rather than chasing growth for its own sake.
